I've been quiet on here... a little like this quiet + beautiful track.

But busy, oh so busy.
Creating art every night, working 9 til 5 every day, and preparing for the Frankfurt Book Fair. Everything is coming to a pointy end by then - projects due (painted skateboards, magazine illustrations, preparing applications, designs for friends wedding invitations and businesses etc etc)... Not much time for friends + activity - but good to have it all going on all the same. I'll sleep well on the plane.

The Dear Patti Smith exhibition is over, and my work is here:

It was a great event! Perfecto. So much great talent - and amazing how artists responded so differently to the tracks. I think my favourite was Lucy Benson who had a video piece projected onto silver stock. Just looking at the work (sans music) you saw a beautiful looped video of water movement - but adding the track too it to a new place. Hard to describe in words, but very beautiful.

I've decided to take part in the 30 Day Project - I seem to be signing up for a lot of things right now. It must be winter.

From their press release,
"Creative people often have the luxury of being able to do anything but just as
often end up doing nothing. Thirty Days Project is thirty deadlines; finish a piece
of creative work by then end of each day.
Tasks expand to fill the time allotted to them, and this is especially true of the
tasks of every-day life. For too many of us minor necessities expand to fill the

Creativity, however, often responds well to a little external pressure. More
precisely, the pressure of a deadline “encourages” decisions to be made which in

I drew this for a pal as she faces some new beginnings (and some major endings) after facing quite a few punches over the last few years. You can duck and weave, but sometimes you have to hop off the course and try something completely beautifully new.

One beginning we are going to do together is meditation class. That shall be grand. The rest, she will be doing on her own, and it will be hard I'm sure. But transformative, as all change is.

WOWOWOWWWw I just got back from 3 lovely days in Hobart... Small city of fresh air, fine art, good coffee, cheap delicious food and... MONA! Which blew my brain. How exciting that there are people in the world willing to invest their millions into a vision like the Museum of Old and New Art - so much inspiration, it felt like a celebration of life and art and humanity. I just returned today from Italy... and I am jetlagged, so jetlagged I took the wrong luggage home and gave a poor Finnish tourist a bad start to their journey.

However, Italy and Bologna were simply amazing! The food, the town, and the busiest week of my life at the fair. Back to back meetings, followed by dinners and work work work - it went by in a sleepless blur, but I was so lucky to be there. Here are a few schnaps from the amazing week!

I have been starting many many books recently... and am beginning to realise how writing children's books is far harder than I thought (which differs from the opinion of Martin Amis, who's books I have always loved, and who recently said "'If I had a serious brain injury I might well write a children's book"). Hmmm....

So anyway, one of these tales I have begun is about an old man and his beloved couch. His grandson thinks the armchair is ugly, and organises a brand spanking new armchair to replace it.

Something ridiculous like this...

Anyway, the old man is not impressed and drags his old chair back out. The boy is told stories about the chair and the things it has seen and as he begins to fall asleep in its comfortable creases he appreciates everything about it...

The story is not quite there but it is great fun beginning a tale with no real structure and just drawing away, playing with textures and image/illo mixes.... and appreciating those amazing writers who can put together a beautiful tale for kids with an economy of words, every line so important and as colourful as the images that go with it.

Well, well, well, another year over... a new one just begun.

I've been a bit slack on posting, drawings and everything else creative the last few months, due to a change in work, with more hours and being exhausted from learning again - but it has been great. And after a few days break, I'm feeling revived and ready to face the new year.

For this week's post I've thought about my collection of art-related resolutions, such as spending more time and money on art (not feeling guilty about buying supplies and different memberships, that sort of thing, getting more time in nature (a long term plan - but going to make it happen this year! Good fodder for creative inspiration) and finally, of course, to make more art. Back on track.

It's Been Awhile...

Oh yes, a long while. There have been several (sometimes life changing) reasons for this...
1. I went to Malaysia for 2 weeks.
2. I'm turning 30... and party organisations have taken *some* time
3. I got a new job... after almost 5 years at the same place, I'm moving into a new role at a children's book publisher. Very exciting!
4. I've been travelling heaps - along with the above, my great friend Penny Lane WON SOYA - and I was lucky to join her at the event.
So it has been sort of troppo, but good. And a slowish Sat eve and Sunday have replenished my energy stocks and I'm ready for a good week ahead - including birthday meals at The Press Club and Cutler and Co, a party, and Monday Funday. Phew!

In the mean time, I thought I should share some pictures from a kids book I did with my friend Sarah. It was fun - and cute - to draw pictures about her cat exploring the garden.

Recently I've begun doing custom portraits, beginning with my friend Kerry who commissioned me to draw a family portrait of her sister, baby and hubby. My housemate Trudy has an awesome dessert she regularly whips up. I know there are some secret ingredients, but the basics are:

Mix a tablespoon of nutella with a small amount of milk, and heat in the microwave. Pour on icecream, add some hundreds and thousands, and chow down... in a happy chocolate coma.

I've always wanted to have an art space... rather than the kitchen table sprawl, the lost notebooks around the house, the ink spilled on carpet. Recently Matty kindly built himself a new music studio in our garage, allowing me to shift this art flotsam from around the house into one lovely little den (/guest room), take over the walls with art (rather than crushing them like I usually do) and put little trinkets from life on the shelves. It is currently messy and has lots of work to make it fully functional, but I now have an ART ROOM STUDIO! Woohoo!

I just also had my mum come and stay... Twas lovely to see her, and she left me with more childhood journals and books and a beautiful scarf she made.

Oooh I am excited to be next week a finalist in the Emerging Artist Award and Exhibition, at the Walker Gallery in Dandenong.

I've just started putting my work "more out there", so it is very exciting to see progress... and I'm really looking forward to see some other work. Should be fun.

Embarrassingly, when I went to hand in my work, children's book illustrator Leigh Hobbs was there and I introduced myself with the babble that I hoped to be a kid's book illustrator one day. Fate or awkward!? :)

There are some clever chaps in NY who have set up "The Art House Co-op", bringing together whoever wants to contribute with cheap, fun international projects.

I'm going to participate in "the canvas project" - I was sent 3 mini canvasses with the words "SAVAGES", "KEMPT" and "PERSISTENT". Just for something different I've made them with oils and ink, however sort of forgotten how long damn oils take to dry... still wet a week later, so needing them to hurry on so I can mail them on their merry way back to the USA to join their exhibition in Brooklyn later this year. Dry oil dry!

Going home for xmas, my mum passed me all my old bits and pieces - diaries, journals, drawings from 10 years + ago. Has amused, shaken and reinspired me. This drawing is a flash back to my old style, something I want to incorporate more (freedom and whimsey) into this year's work.

That time of Year

Its that time of year when you start thinking about the next; also... what you did wrong, what you did right, and where you want to go next year.

All year I've been oscillating between this lovely blend of art/kinesiology and work (sometimes not so nice). And battling constant fears about the scary uncertain nature of having your own business (the art and kinesiology) vs the frustration of office work, which has a safer income yet is not my passion. I do enjoy it at times, but sitting at a desk all day at a computer, vs the beauty of the clinic room, or setting up art all over the table at home - its an easy choice!

So there we have it, and I'm sure a complicated battle for a lot of people, I've been lucky to work part time to give everything a go. Which I have to a small degree, but haven't *pushed* myself (eeek - its scary! Am I good enough?! What if I'm fooling myself, or worse still convincing myself these are my passions, when maybe its something I haven't discovered yet?!). Breathe.....

Meanwhile, I'm on a constant search and watch of other artists who have made/are making it work. For example:
Olive Dear (I've seen at many beautiful shops around Melbourne)
Good Old AshleyG (who's art and colours make me happy every time I look at it)
All the ladies on Design Sponge
Heidi and Seek (she is a nice lass - sent me a really sweet comment when I got started, and this month was in Frankie! Nice one)
And many other bloggers, Etsy people etc etc.

SO... I guess my aim for 2010 is dedication, focus and bravery. To continue to give it a go. Keep posting, drawing, looking around and building the Kinesiology clinic.
